My career in beauty journalism came about by chance. It seemed far more exciting than a role as a marketing executive, which was my first job offer after leaving university with a business degree.
Whilst studying, I was approached to do some modelling work, which I did on a part-time basis. Although I knew that this wasn’t a long term career path, my modelling days were amazing and even involved relocating to India. Modelling taught me so much about looking after myself - on the inside-out, and fuelled my interest in beauty.
After graduating, I managed to secure a position at a new Asian magazine (Asian Woman & Bride) as an editorial researcher - which, for a young, beauty-obsessed, fashion-fanatic, was a dream job! I ended up staying there for four exciting years and worked my way up to the role of beauty editor. During this time, I made it my mission to learn as much as possible about what is a fascinating and ever-growing industry. I built up a network of contacts and learnt from some of the best professionals in the business.
A few years ago, I decided to go freelance so I could write for more publications and work on my passion project, which was a beauty book for Asian women. My first book, ‘The Ultimate Guide to Beauty’ hit shelves last year. My Asian readers will probably agree that, although countless publications are on offer for caucasian and black women, there is very little advice out there for South Asian women and this book is dedicated to you.
This year I was named Beauty Journalist of the Year and Best Freelance Beauty Journalist, at the prestigious Johnson & Johnson Beauty Journalism Awards (the Oscars of the beauty journalism world).
My articles can often be found in the Daily Mail, The Daily Express, Sunday Times Style, The Mail on Sunday, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Grazia, Vogue India and various others. I am also the health & beauty editor at Asiana and Asiana Wedding magazines, which gives me the opportunity to explore issues and advise my community, which has a very unique set of beauty needs.
Through my work, I am fortunate enough to learn about products before they arrive in stores and I keep in tune with the latest trends emerging in the industry through regular briefings with experts and brands.
My typical day involves researching, sorting through sackfuls of post filled with tons of new beauty products, attending product launches and reviewing the hottest new treatments, then reporting back to you on what works and what doesn’t.
I really love my job and hope this passion comes across in my work.
Thanks for visiting my site.
