s1Last week was a diary date that I never miss - the MAC trends presentation. As usual, MAC’s Creative Director Terry Barber presented the event and talked us beauty journalists through the key looks for Spring/ Summer 2010. Here’s a sneak preview of what’s to come…

Trend 1. Upbeat faces - “This look is about taking pretty colours, but giving them a rebellious edge so that they don’t come across too bridal. It’s about wearing colour with a cool factor,” explains Terry. So use bright colours, but be light-handed when it comes to application. These looks were seen at Diane Von Furstenburg, Emilio Pucci and Just Cavalli.

Key products to get the look: Lipstick in Fresh Salmon, Lipstick in Bubblegum and Powder Blush in Style.

Trend 2. California tans - Make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury sums up this trend as: “It’s healthy, honeyed, recession-proof make-up…Sports Illustrated ’80s icons and gorgeous athleticism.” Models at Chloe, Herve Leger and Balman demonstrated this look well.

Key products to get the look: Mac Cream Colour Base in Mid-Tone Sepia, Bronzing Powder in Matte Bronze, Lipstick in Twig and Eye Pencil in Coffee.

Trend 3. Underground beauty - Terry Barber says: “This look is more of an attempt to project an attitude of individuality and a sense of ownership than about looking gorgeous in any traditional sense.” It’s minimal make-up, maximum impact and definitely with an edge. From backstage show pictures at Baby Phat, C’N'C Costume National and Jason Wu where this look dominated, models sporting dark feline eyes and bold lips as separate statements.

Key products to get the look: MAC Penultimate Eyeliner in Rapidblack, Eye Shadow in Rule and Lipstick in Russian Red.

Trend 4. Undressed faces - This look is about minimal amounts of make-up - just enough to upgrade your features. Skin is under-refined, yet made to look alive with the right product choices. Leave lips bare or lashes mascara-less - these are the touchstones of this season’s uber-nude look. Although the look is minimal, bring the face to life with shine enhancing textures that make the complexion glisten and radiate health.

Key products to get the look: MAC Gloss Texture, Strobe Liquid, Cream Colour Base in Luna, Brow Set in Clear and Pro Longlash in Barelash.

Overall, next season is about shunning the excess and opting for make-up that is fresh, natural and tailored to your own individuality.
